Windows 7 Beta Rocks

Ok,

I'm not sure I ever installed a beta of Windows before, not sure what it was that drove me to want to install this one, perhaps the fact that Vista is slow or to use 64 bit and take advantage of all my Ram.

But I don't regret it, I'm not one for half jumping in, install in a VM or a separate Partition, I just reformatted my entire work Laptop and installed from the 64 bit ISO.

The install was a breeze, the speed of the whole thing is much quicker than Vista, I swear Vista must have a for (i=0; i<1000; i++) loop after every statement.

So far all my applications run and run well, this gives me a good feeling, because if they run well on a Beta O/S it can only get better. I'm also running quite a bit of Beta software, some I can't name due to NDA's. But Skype 4 Beta and Flex 4 Beta both work as do others.

I like the new task bar, once you get used to it, and use it's benefits its great, I must admit I always stick with the new way things work, it is tempting to change to the old style, but they changed it for a reason, try to stick with it.

I also like the name, Windows 7, I wish they would just stick with numbers. from 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, XP, Vista, 7. It's easy to forget that this is the seventh main release, that's not a high number, given how long its been around. And especially if you compare it to other software that has been around a lot less and might be at version 13 or higher.

I had also tried the IE8 beta several times and didn't like it, but IE8 (which is what comes with Windows 7) seems prety good, all my regular sites worked and besides a couple minor quirks, I haven't had the need to go install anything else.

The release is late 2009, but I recommend you get onto the beta and try to use it until then. As soon as I can buy a key, I will.

Good job Microsoft, looking forward to what gets added between now and release.

Aww doesn't Windows 2000 count as a main release? It rocked! :)

That's a pretty brave step installing Windows 7 Beta 1 on your main machine though. I've always been quick to try out betas (even back in the Win2K days) but I've always done it on a separate partition *just* in case, even this time.

Speaking of which, Windows 7 is rocking IMO! But make sure you install the hotfix for Media Player - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/961367

I might start getting my dev stuff set up in Win7 over the next few days and see if it's usable... I'm due for an Eclipse upgrade anyway, still on 3.2 at the moment :P

Maybe you could do an update post after you've been using it full-time for a week or two?

It's good to hear its faster. I'm running it in a VM but I think I'm going to put a spare HDD in my main laptop and run it nativly and see how it goes. It's good to hear how much faster it is I'm so sick of Vista.

Haha, what you said about the Vista install is so true. I'll be trying out Windows 7 soon, I've heard a lot of good things about it.

Going to try running it in a VM first, and then I may triple boot my main PC with Ubuntu, Vista and Win7.

Seriously? Didn't they just release Vista? I'm so not impressed with Microsoft. And I went out exploring and finally uploaded the latest Linux OS, Ubuntu. Way way better if you asked me!! Not only is it completely free but it's better, user friendly and to get software, you just click the equivilent of the start menu, hit 'add software' and the OS searches the net for you and gives you a list of things that you can click to install. No downloads, no hassles and no money!!! It rocks.

Check out the link which has screenshots, a more detailed review and download links:

And no, this isn't spam...I just want to give people interested in Windows 7 a better option. Enjoy!

Yeah,

Well I will never move to Linux, its the here today gone tommorow technology. Ubuntu is new, prior to that Debian was popular, prior to that Red Hat, next year something else.

I know a lot of people on Ubuntu and they have trouble, can't project, can't use a lot of programs, cant get the right drivers.

I'll move away from Windows when there is something else that works better and runs all my software.

@The Beam: Vista went RTM more than 2 years ago and will reach the 2 year retail release mark at the end of this month! Usually most people cry about the slow pace at which Microsoft release new operating system versions, while on the other hand corporates cry that they can't keep up. It's hard to please everyone :P

Just to keep the facts in perspective:

"Well I will never move to Linux, its the here today gone tommorow technology."

Linux began in 1991, 18 years ago! And is growing in the popularity stakes quickly. I dont think its about to dissapear.

"Ubuntu is new, prior to that Debian was popular, prior to that Red Hat, next year something else."

Ubuntu is based with, and is compatible with debian, redhat have a comericial products with an 8 year support period (an a compatible free version from a 3rd party also exists, also with 8 years of updates). The two main schools are redhat and debian based, and as such most linux software is supplied in a form that will work on any. Windows emulation is also getting a lot better very quickly.

Having said that, if you dont wanna use linux, fine, im not forcing you. Glad your happy with windows 7. Im considering trying it too.

Ahh the facts.

Well, Im a *nix fan believe it or not. I was an Aix Administrator of high end machines, and I sold solutions that ran on Red Hat and was (probably still am) a Certified Red Hat engineer.

Still, back then (2000) you could buy red hat off the shelves in harvey norman, now that cheep version doesnt exist.

There is a new flavour and build of Linux all too often, I can't roll it out to all my users, I cant trust it will work, it will be supported and it will be here in 2 years.

Plus, everyone I know has problems with it, where can I get a driver, how do I do multiple screens, is there a Visio compatiable program.

Its all a bit hard, especially for the desktop. However, on a server, hosting Railo or PHP with MySQL, it has a place, quite like the LAMP model.

Just for reference, I installed Windows 7 on my Dell XPS 1530, I didn't need a single driver, everything just worked.

Whats my chance of the same happening with Ubuntu?

I have recently ordered a new Dell Studio XPS that comes with Vista installed. Based off of the reviews I have read, I am considering downloading Windows 7 Beta 1 and using it as my OS. My issues are: 1) I'm only mildly computer literate, so I'm concerned that the Beta will be more unstable than Vista, leading to frustration and regret, and 2) my understanding is that the Beta version will only work until August of this year, at which point the user most purchase the released Windows 7 or go back to Vista. Do you have an estimate/guess as to how much it will cost to upgrade to Windows 7 from a Vista OS purchased in January 2009, and/or would I risk file incompatibility if I reverted back to Vista after using Windows 7 Beta 1 for a period of time.

Trust me, and others out there running it, it is much more stable than Vista with probably the exception of IE 8

Would all of those people who claim that Windows 7 is faster than Vista please provide us with the figures that prove it. On my PC the only thing faster than Vista is the start up time. But what's 10 seconds?

Dale,
I've recently upgraded my xps 1530 as well. I'm only having one problem and was wondering if you heard anything about this.
When I restart my laptop (using the start menu - restart or shutdown), it comes up in VGA resolution and the touchpad and keyboard don't work. If I cycle the power, it comes up normally and works fine until the next restart.

Any ideas?

I've updated the only driver available on Microsoft Update which was the video.

Thx.

Guy

No idea,

Try getting the latest nvidia driver from dell website, I know 3 seperate people with 1530's where this hasnt been an issue.

Its beautiful. Maybes its post Vista stress that makes Win7 rock but I love it. Its responive, I click the icon and my Outlook opens instantly, so does explorer, I alt-tab from brand new graphic intensive games and it comes to desktop without a stutter and then tabs back into the game like a dream. Its faster than XP, prettier than Vista and really MS have done a fantastic job. I have been running Vista for a long time and its laggy, stuttering, dysfunctional performance has driven me crazy, I actually wiped the Vista OS and switched to Win7 BETA as my main OS which shows how much Vista had wrong with it. So far in one month I havent found a single flaw in Win7 and its still running as fast as the day I installed it. Its the first MS os since Windows 3.1 that responds the second you click the mouse, even XP took a second to open explorers and outlook ect, Win7 doesnt even think about it, click and its there. Masterpiece.

win 7 does rock ,, no i cannot give you official details ,, but trust me it is vista last coffin nail, (once it is out), i am sure no one will ever again buy vviissttaa for any reason...
but to the ubuntu negative comments, ubu does everything it was meant to do well, it is no longer in a geeks realm to work with linux due to distros like ubu,, no it does not run applications THAT are made only for windows but i does a amazing amount of similar work ,, and never to forget it is FREE !!!
it also has the best most friendly based help forums of any distro out there, it is darn stable, plus has better YES, better eye candy than windows 7.....
windows 7 rocks ,, but it will put a dent in my pocket for sure,, and as for ubu or linux mint they rock if nothing else because they are easy to use and free
me ill take them both
